Is IDT Corp (IDT) the Most Misunderstood Stock on the Market? Why This “Telecom” Is a Hidden Gem

IDT Corporation (IDT) appears to be a classic value investing scenario: a complex company that the market has miscategorized and misunderstood. While its legacy communications business provides stable cash flow, its high-growth Fintech and SaaS segments (NRS and net2phone) are rapidly expanding and highly profitable. With a pristine balance sheet, explosive recent earnings, and a…

1. Overview

In a market chasing AI unicorns and meme stocks, we at Midtown Equity Research get excited about something a little less glamorous: hidden value. We love finding companies that the market has misunderstood or overlooked. This passion led us to IDT Corporation (IDT). It is a company filed under boring telecom. However, it is quietly incubating a high-growth fintech and SaaS business. What we found was too compelling not to share, and we hope this analysis helps you “Think Deeper and Invest Wiser.”

Headquartered in Newark, New Jersey, IDT Corporation provides communications and payment services globally.7 The company operates through four distinct segments. Fintech includes BOSS Money international remittance. National Retail Solutions (NRS) is a point-of-sale network and merchant services provider. net2phone is a cloud communications platform for businesses. Traditional Communications offers legacy international calling services.8 This diversified structure is key to understanding the investment thesis, as we’ll explore later.

At first glance, IDT’s market metrics show a company that has dramatically outperformed its peers but with higher volatility. This immediately raises the question of whether the added risk is justified by the superior returnsโ€”a question we aim to answer in this report.

A Quarter That Demands Attention

Sometimes a company delivers an earnings report so strong it forces the market to re-evaluate everything. IDT’s third-quarter fiscal 2025 report, released in early June, was one of those moments. The results were, to put it mildly, a blockbuster that provides the freshest and most compelling evidence for the bull case.9

Let’s look at the numbers, which speak for themselves:

  • Gross Profit surged 15.4% year-over-year to $111.9 million, pushing the gross margin to a record 37.1%.10
  • Income from Operations skyrocketed an incredible 133% year-over-year to $26.6 million.9
  • Adjusted EBITDA, a key measure of profitability, jumped 57% to $32.2 million.9
  • GAAP Earnings Per Share (EPS) climbed a staggering 290% to $0.86.9
  • Operating Cash Flow was a massive $75.7 million for the quarter, a figure that directly challenges some of the historical critiques of the company’s cash generation.10

IDT Corporation’s impressive quarterly performance metrics highlight significant growth: 133% increase in income from operations, 290% rise in earnings per share, a 57% boost in adjusted EBITDA, and a record gross margin of 37.1%.

These figures, detailed in the company’s June 9, 2025, Form 10-Q filing, signal a potential inflection point in the business’s profitability and operational efficiency.11 Furthermore, on September 22, 2025, the company filed a Form 8-K announcing it had declared its regular quarterly dividend of $0.06 per share, reinforcing its commitment to returning capital to shareholders.12, 13 This combination of explosive growth and steady shareholder returns is precisely the kind of dynamic that value investors look for.

3. Fundamental Analysis: A Telecom bull case?

The Battle of the Methodologies

This is where the story gets interesting. Depending on which expert report you read, IDT is either a high-quality, healthy business or one plagued by weak earnings. This divergence is fascinating because it reveals how different analytical frameworks can “see” the same company in completely different ways. Understanding this conflict is key to understanding the investment opportunity.

The Bull Case: High Quality and Low Risk

On one side, you have analyses from S&P Global Market Intelligence and ISS-EVA, which paint a very positive picture. S&P Global gives IDT excellent marks for Quality (89/100) and Financial Health (97/100). Their model highlights that IDT outperforms its sector median in crucial metrics like Return on Invested Capital (34.4% vs. 5.7%) and Operating Cash Flow to Assets ($0.22 vs. $0.10).14

Similarly, ISS-EVA, a firm specializing in Economic Value Added (EVA) analysis, assigns IDT its highest “BUY” rating. Its proprietary PRVit score, which measures risk-adjusted performance against valuation, is a perfect 100th percentile relative to its sector peers. This top-tier score is driven by an exceptional Performance Score (91st percentile) and a very low Risk Score (4th percentile), indicating stable returns and strong liquidity.15 In short, these models see a financially robust, highly profitable, and attractively priced company.

The Skeptic’s Case: A Question of Quality

On the other side of the aisle is Jefferson Research, which assigns IDT a more cautious “HOLD” rating. While they agree that the company has the “Strongest” Balance Sheet Quality and a “Low Risk” Valuation, their model flags significant concerns. The primary red flags are a “Weak” Earnings Quality and, most critically, a “Weakest” Cash Flow Quality rating.16 Their methodology involves adjusting reported earnings and cash flow for what they deem to be non-recurring or non-operational items. Their downward adjustments suggest a history of earnings that may not be fully supported by core, repeatable cash generation.

This stark disagreement is best visualized in a direct comparison:

Fundamental Pillar / AnalystValuationQuality/PerformanceFinancial HealthCash Flow
S&P Global Market Intelligence14Undervalued (61/100)High (89/100)Healthy (97/100)Strong (High OCF ratios)
ISS-EVA15Undervalued (Buy Rating)Exceptionally Strong (91st Percentile)Very Low Risk (4th Percentile)Strong (Part of Performance)
Jefferson Research16Low RiskWeakStrongestWeakest

This table crystallizes the entire investment debate. There is a clear consensus on two points: the balance sheet is a fortress, and the valuation is attractive. The entire disagreement hinges on the “quality” of its earnings and cash flow. This creates a classic value investing scenario. The market is clearly pricing in the risk highlighted by Jefferson Research. The central question for an investor is whether the recent operational performance, particularly the massive cash flow in Q3, has rendered that historical “quality” risk obsolete. If it has, then the stock is a bargain before the market catches up.

4. Technical Analysis

COILING FOR THE NEXT MOVE?

The technical chart for IDT tells a story that beautifully complements the fundamental narrative of uncertainty and potential change. The long-term picture is one of immense strength, with the stock delivering a staggering +879% return over the past five years.2 This establishes a powerful underlying uptrend.

Zooming in on the past year, the stock has traded in a wide range between a low of $37.45 and a high of $71.12, showcasing its potential for significant price swings.1 An analysis of daily price data from the last six months shows a key pattern. There was a massive surge in price and volume in early June, coinciding with the strong earnings report. This was followed by a peak in early July. Subsequently, there was a period of consolidation.17

As of late September 2025, IDT’s stock is trading slightly below its 50-day moving average. However, it remains comfortably above its 200-day moving average.2 Technicians often interpret this as a healthy consolidation or a “breather” within a larger uptrend. The price action suggests the market is digesting the recent news and trying to establish a new, fair valuation. A decisive breakout above the recent resistance level near $68-$70, especially on high volume, could signal that the bulls have won the fundamental debate and the next leg up is beginning.

5. Analyst Ratings

A Small but Mighty Bullish Chorus

While IDT is not heavily covered by Wall Street, the independent research firms that do analyze it are overwhelmingly bullish. This isn’t a stock lighting up Reddit, and for a value hunter, that’s often a good sign. The opportunity lies in getting in before the crowd.

The consensus is clear:

  • LSEG StarMine: Rates IDT as “Very Bullish” with a perfect score of 10.0 based on the inputs of four firms.6
  • Verus Analytics: Issues a clear “Buy” rating from its quantitative model, which specifically analyzes factors like earnings quality and balance sheet strength.2
  • ISS-EVA: As noted earlier, maintains a strong “Buy” rating due to its top-percentile ranking against sector peers.15
  • McLean Equity Research: Also rates the stock a “Buy” with a “Conservative” risk profile, placing it at the very top of its industry peer comparison table based on its proprietary cash-flow-centric methodology.18

Most importantly for investors looking for a concrete target, the analyst covered by Refinitiv has set a 12-month price target of $85.60.2 Based on the current price of $62.57, this target implies a potential upside of approximately 37%. While this is based on a single analyst, its conclusion aligns with the bullish findings from multiple other independent research methodologies.

6. Risks & Counterarguments

Every Call Has Some Static

No analysis is complete without playing devil’s advocate. To build real conviction, we have to understand the bear case as well as the bulls do. For IDT, the risks fall into three main categories. Addressing these head-on is crucial for a balanced perspective.

1. The Valuation Question (Morningstar)

The most jarring counterpoint comes from Morningstar’s quantitative analysis, which estimates IDT’s fair value at a mere $18.92, implying the stock is massively overvalued at its current price.19 This is a risk that cannot be ignored. However, it’s essential to understand how a quantitative, algorithm-driven model might arrive at this conclusion. Such models often rely heavily on historical data and peer comparisons.20 It’s plausible the model is penalizing IDT for its historical quality metrics (which, as we’ve seen, are improving) and comparing it to slow-growth legacy telecoms, thereby failing to properly value its burgeoning Fintech and SaaS segments.

2. The Quality Conundrum (Jefferson Research)

As discussed, the most serious fundamental risk is the “Weakest Cash Flow Quality” rating from Jefferson Research.16 This suggests a history of financial results that may be less robust than they appear on the surface. The primary rebuttal to this risk is the most recent, tangible data. The stunning $75.7 million in operating cash flow generated in Q3 2025 provides hard evidence that the company’s ability to convert profits into cash has improved dramatically.10 Furthermore, McLean Equity Research, whose entire methodology is built around cash flow analysis, notes that for the trailing twelve months, “Cash Flow From Operations of $121.5M exceeds net income of $96.0M,” a hallmark of high-quality earnings that directly contradicts the historical concern.18

3. Governance and ESG Concerns (MSCI)

Finally, investors must consider the governance structure. MSCI gives IDT a “Laggard” overall ESG profile and highlights a key risk: the founding Jonas family controls 74.6% of the voting power.21 This creates a “potentially entrenched” board and means minority shareholders have very little say in corporate strategy. While concentrated ownership can be a significant risk, it can also foster long-term strategic thinking over short-term market appeasement. The company’s pristine balance sheet (virtually no debt) and strong recent performance suggest that, to date, management’s interests have been aligned with creating shareholder value. This is a calculated risk that appears to be reflected in the stock’s valuation.

7. Additional Notes

More Than Just a Telecom: The Sum-of-the-Parts Thesis

The core of our deep value thesis rests on the idea that the market is making a classic categorization error. It is valuing IDT as a single, slow-growth telecommunications company when, in reality, it is a holding company with two very different types of businesses under one roof. The market sees a melting ice cube, but it’s ignoring the high-tech water purification plant being built right next to it, funded by the meltwater. By looking at IDT on a sum-of-the-parts basis, a much higher intrinsic value becomes apparent.

  • GrowthCo (NRS & Fintech): This is IDT’s modern SaaS and Fintech engine. In the most recent quarter, NRS saw recurring revenue grow by 23%, and BOSS Money transactions increased by 27%.9, 22 Standalone public companies with these growth profiles and business models frequently trade at high multiples of revenue or EBITDA. These segments are the future of the company and are expanding rapidly.
  • CashCowCo (Traditional Communications): This is the legacy international calling business. It’s in a state of managed decline, with revenues falling 5.2% in the last quarter. However, management’s execution here is brilliant. Despite falling sales, the segment’s adjusted EBITDA grew by an impressive 30% through aggressive cost management.9, 22 This segment is a resilient, cash-generating machine that provides the capital to fund the growth of NRS and Fintech, as well as pay the dividend, without needing to take on debt.

The market seems to be applying a low, blended multiple to the entire company, dragged down by the declining revenues of the legacy business. We believe this fails to recognize the value of the high-growth assets, which, if valued appropriately, would suggest a significantly higher share price for the entire corporation.

8. Summary

IDT Corporation represents a compelling, misunderstood value opportunity. Valid concerns about historical earnings quality and governance exist. However, a rock-solid balance sheet appears to overshadow them. Stellar recent performance also contributes. Additionally, there is a collection of high-growth businesses in Fintech and SaaS that are being undervalued within a traditional telecom shell. With a consensus of independent research firms pointing to significant upside, IDT appears to be a classic case of deep value hiding in plain sight. It is a complex story, but for investors willing to do the homework, the line appears to be clear.
